My journey from fat to fit!

I’ve been trying to lose fat and get fit for a long time. This will be my blog about my fitness journey!

When a lot of people go from extremely fat to healthy and fit, they usually leave a lot out of their story. For instance, in online articles someone might have one paragraph describing when they were 300 pounds and sneaking fast food on their way home before eating a regular dinner with their family, then in the next paragraph they’re out running 5K’s and 10K’s.

I want to show the fitness journey from beginning to end, with a lot of details and the philosophical outlook I’ve come up with on my own to guide me on my fitness journey. Hopefully, my experience can help others.

I bought a 4-pack of Annie’s Mac and cheese, but I’m going to try to wait as long as I can until I eat one. I need to get into the habit of eating what’s healthier for my heart. I also have two 1.67 pound containers of ground turkey in the freezer, I was going to make it with the Mac and cheese, but now I’m holding off on eating that, too.

I bought some Annie’s refrigerated cinnamon rolls that you bake at home, they’re made with whole grains. There are five cinnamon rolls to a can at 320 calories each, so that’s 1,600 calories every time I bake some. The next time I go shopping, I’m not buying more of them. I was planning on getting orange juice. It’s high in calories, but I can control how much I take in each time, instead of being forced to consume a large quantity of something at once. Now I’ve changed my mind, and I’m getting oranges instead.

I bought some broccoli and asparagus and have been eating them every day since I went to the store. I feel better when I eat vegetables. I’ve also been trying to be more consistent with documenting what I eat daily. There were months when I only tracked two or three days in a month, but this month I’ve rarely deviated from keeping my food journal. I was told some time ago by a fitness expert that I won’t make progress with weight loss until I keep track of my food intake reliably.

I cooked black lentils for dinner Thursday, 3/12/26.

I trained with weights Saturday, Sunday and Thursday. I want to be more consistent, but I was sore Monday brought Wednesday.

On Monday I went shopping and got two blocks of Monterey Jack cheese, two pounds each. On Tuesday around 2pm I got really bad chest pains. I’m not sure if it was indigestion or my heart, but I was concerned. I’m going to try to limit my cheese eating to once a week, or stay away from it as long as possible. This was actually wake-up call for me, I needed something to prod me into eating healthier. On Tuesday’s the trash goes out, so I threw all the cheese away.

I also bought a case of 12 quarts of almond milk for $13, I’m putting 8 ounces in my oatmeal in the mornings along with whey protein, PB Fit powdered peanut butter, and Chia seeds.

It hasn’t rained lately, so I’ve been walking for 30 minutes daily.

I had a case of 36 candy bars, but I recalled something my health teacher taught us in 10th grade. He said if you eat candy bars every day, eventually you could have a heart attack. After a day of eating a lot of them, I had a pain in my mid section. I’m not sure if it was my stomach or not. I kept 7 of them, and threw the rest away in the trash, about 20 or more of them. I think this was the motivation to stay away from them indefinitely. I plan on buying some cheese the next time I go shopping, and will throw some of that away, too, so I don’t eat too much of it.

I read an article written by a billionaire who advised eating black lentils and making smoothies with Macadamia nut milk. I ordered some of both from Amazon. I cooked some of the lentils and they tasted great and were very filling. I used 8 ounces of Macadamia nut milk in oatmeal and it was great.

It rained from Sunday through Wednesday, so I didn’t start walking until Thursday. I walked twice.

I’ve encountered a lot of conflict in my life, and one thing I’ve learned is to take care of my body and become strong. That is more important than being rich.

I bought a case of candy bars from Amazon. My goal is to eat one each Friday and one each Saturday, then skip the other days. If I succeed, the candy bars will last until July. I also have Kodiak brownie mix, so that pulls me through. The candy bars weren’t as fresh as the ones I bought in 2024.

I bought some ground turkey, because I feel the canned chicken breast has too much sodium. I ordered some Annie’s Mac and cheese and cooked ground turkey and onion into it. This is something that should be a rare treat, because it’s heavy in calories. It’s really good though.

I plan on doing full body workouts while avoiding exercises that could injure my lower back, such as bent over rear delt flyes and dumbbell deadlifts. I want to do my workout before eating the macaroni, cheese and ground turkey.

When I went shopping I bought some strawberries and bananas, they make great protein smoothies. I’m trying to eat broccoli after breakfast to get my veggies in, if I don’t consume it early in the day I tend to skip eating it. I have Normandy frozen vegetables from Costco, it’s broccoli, cauliflower, and two different types of carrots. I’m avoiding drinking the left over broccoli water, because a couple of weeks ago my lower back was sore, but I’m unsure what caused it. It might’ve been doing bent over rear delt flyes, or the broccoli water, or a combination of the two.

It’s been raining for a few days so I couldn’t go for a walk, but Thursday it cleared up so I was able to get out there.

I had a weird reaction to some salty foods I ate on Friday, February 7th. I had bought a giant sack of potato chips when I went shopping, and my body wasn’t accustomed to the excessive salt. My lower back was in a lot of pain, and I couldn’t sleep most of the night. I was worried that my kidneys were affected. I saw something online that said sugar affects the kidneys and constricts blood vessels , so I’m trying to eliminate sugar and salt. Training reader delts might have had something to do with it, too.

On Saturday, I only ate around 1,600 calories the whole day. I ate 8 ounces of dry measured Quaker oats that I cooked in the microwave with water and added two tablespoons of powdered peanut butter, then for lunch I had three hardboiled eggs, two tablespoons of Chosen mayonnaise and honey mustard, and two slices of Dave’s killer bread. For dinner I had what I ate for breakfast. I ordered some canned pineapple that I keep refrigerated. There are 12 cans, 8 ounces each for around $18. I’m trying to eat one can a day. For a snack I had 8 ounces of canned pineapples on Saturday.

On Sunday, I weighed over three pounds less than I did Friday morning. I hadn’t weighed myself Saturday morning, because I drank a lot of water and thought that would throw the weight too far up. I tried to repeat Saturday’s diet on Sunday. If I can keep this up, I should be able to get down to 265 pounds in about three weeks. If that works, I might try to see how much weight I can lose eating 1,600 to 2,000 calories a day for a long time.

Update: I wasn’t able to maintain such a low calorie intake, so I’m trying for 2,400 daily calories and staying active.

I read a book by Jim Stoppani that said when you do cardio, your body burns fat for some time after you’re done exercising. Instead of walking for 50 minutes once a day, I started walking for 30 minutes, then at a later time for another 20 minutes. This way I get the fat burning effect twice a day. I need to keep this up and see if it works better than walking once a day.

I think consistency is the most important key to losing weight and gaining muscle. I can feel changes in my arms that I didn’t have a year or two ago. Doing three moderate weight training workouts a week is better than doing a massive weight training workout once every two weeks.

I skipped weighing myself for a few days because it was really cold during the mornings. I weigh myself in my underwear, and don’t want to run up the bill by turning on the heater.

On Tuesday, 1/27/26 I weighed myself and I was 284.8 pounds. This inspired me to wonder what it would be like if I inverted the 84 to 48 and weighed 248 pounds by the end of June 2026. This would mean losing around 7 pounds a month between now and then. It’s possible, but it would mean a lot of work. I’ve noticed that when I eat home made chili con carne I lose more weight than when I eat other stuff.

I did a full body workout on Tuesday, last week it took me three days to hit all of the muscle groups. I plan on doing this twice a week for a couple of months, then bump it up to three workouts per week, maybe in March.

I ordered some candy bars, I want to try to limit myself to one on Fridays and one on Saturdays. My mother had diabetes in her 70s, so I have a genetic predisposition for it. I need to be careful about ingesting sugar. I never took sugar intake seriously before, but now I’m going to try to gain more control over it.

I was 285.8 in Saturday, 1/24/26 and got down to 282 on Friday, 1/30/26.

I got down to 281 pounds Sunday 1/18/26, but I hit 286.4 the next day. I had eaten some oatmeal crème cookies and tuna casserole. I think I need to avoid those foods. When I was losing weight I was eating oatmeal and chili con carne, I need to focus on those more.

On Thursday morning I was 281.2 pounds I was going to do a full body workout, but decided to split it up into two days. Legs, chest and back on Thursday, and shoulders, trapezius and arms Friday. Doing it this way twice a week, I’ll train four days a week. Thursday and Friday, then Monday and Tuesday will be my workout days. Friday morning I was 283.6 pounds.

Eating chili con carne seems to be having the right effect. I’ve lost over 8 pounds since Saturday, 1/3/26. I’ve been walking for 50 minutes every morning since it stopped raining, and I’ve continued to do three sets of weight lifting every night before dinner. I haven’t missed a day of weight training.

I’ve been eating a cup of oats dry measured cooked in the microwave with water. I add whey protein and two tablespoons of powdered peanut butter. I ran out of Chia seeds, but decided not to buy more of them for now. I gave up intermittent fasting a few weeks ago, but forgot to mention it.

I stopped doing push-ups because my abdominals were too sore. I also gave up in intermittent fasting several weeks ago, but forgot to mention it.

I got two teeth pulled on my birthday, and had to start eating soft foods like oatmeal and chili con carne. I want to try eating chili consistently, I had good results with weight loss eating it before. It might be a good choice for weight loss and muscle building.

I’ve been loyal to my New Year’s resolutions. I’ve trained with weights every day since January 1st. I do upright rows for 3 sets one day, then 3 sets of bicep hammer curls the next day. I alternate between those two workouts.

It rained every day since the 1st until the 5th, so I had not been walking in the mornings. On January 6th it stopped raining, so I resumed my walks.

I need to have a long range plan that goes into June. If I have my training regimen planned out that far in advance and I stick with it, that is better for me than to have shorter range goals. The problem up until now has been that I trained too hard too fast, and gave up. If I just stick to three high quality sets a day, and do them without fail, then I should see a huge difference in 5 months. I’ve been practicing progressive overload by gradually increasing my repetitions.

In June I’ll bump it up to 5 sets a day. When I look back at my training journal and see that I’ve lifted weights each day, it inspires me to avoid skipping workouts. A famous bodybuilder wrote that a person needs a time limit on when to achieve their fitness goals, or they won’t follow through. I now believe this.

I downloaded the first Rocky film from iTunes, it inspired me to take training more seriously.

When I make chili con carne, I use Pinto beans, two 8 ounce cans of low sodium tomato sauce, two cans of Kirkland canned chicken and low sodium chili con carne seasoning. I think this is really healthy. I’ve made it before, I need to eat it consistently and monitor my results. As of Friday morning 1/9/26, I went down to 285 pounds, I was 291 pounds on Saturday, 1/3/26.
