*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Hi, Reneabri.
First off, I commend you on being so open about your past. Not a lot of people would open to strangers like this, but at the same writing your feelings (or you past) down can very therapeutic.
You don't have you bio down yet, so I don't know how old you are, but from what you say here you've been through a lot in your younger years.
You kind of ended this on an ambiguous note. In other words, you left the ending kind of open. But that's not to say that we can't figure out what happened after that guy gave you that ride.
One thing I want to say here is please don't feel down and out, as though life has no meaning. I see at the beginning of this where you're still keeping a positive attitude, and I salute you for that! You WILL grow up and you WILL see the meaning of life like it's supposed to be! *ThumbsUpL* Life is going to have its ups and downs, but I know you're strong, and no matter how many times you get knocked down, you're going to stand right back up and keep fighting even harder than before!
Lord knows how many times I've been knocked down!
The main thing is, Reneabri, keep you chin up and keep that positive attitude! It's people like you who go a long way in life, and I can tell you're one of them!
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend, and welcome to WdC! If you like to write, then you're going to love it here!
By the way, if you ever want/need to talk to somebody, don't be afraid to ask. There's always somebody on here 24/7 willing to listen (including myself), and if they/I don't get right back to you, they/I will soon!
PS-You might want to get your bioblock (biography) set up so we can know a little something about you (hobbies, favorite books/authors, location, etc.), but that's up to you, of course.
PSS-And since you’re new here, perhaps you’d like to check out "Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window. and introduce yourself to the rest of the community if you haven’t already.

*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Greetings, Beholden!
I like this, and I can totally relate to it.
You did a great job of telling about this possible once-in-a-lifetime wildlife encounter, so it’s no wonder it would have been cemented in your memory. Your descriptions of your surroundings were well done, as was the game you played with Rufus. But what stood out to me was the effect that waterbuck had on you by seemingly making itself appear as a man as it stood face to face with you! I don’t know if these animals know they’re doing that (you mentioned you’d read about it), or if it’s built into their genes as a ‘self-protective’ kind of thing, but it’s still cool.
And that line about you being one with the buck was a perfect way to end this.
Bravo!
I was raised in the country, and I spent a good portion of my life cutting firewood in the forest. I’ve seen things in the woods that ‘city-slickers’ couldn’t even imagine! The one that I’ll never forget was the day when we were taking a break eating lunch. My partner and I had been cutting in this same area for a couple of days and we’d seen some deer grazing at a distance, but we left them alone and they left us alone (naturally!). But on this day I was sitting on the tailgate of my truck eating an apple when a doe suddenly walked up behind me and just stood there looking at me! I don’t know if it was mentally challenged or what, but it wasn’t scared of me at all! I think I even said, “Well, hello there,” (but it didn’t say anything back *Laugh*). For some reason I held out my hand with the apple and the doe took it in her mouth, dropped it to the ground, and proceeded to eat it right there in front of me! Then when she was done, she just casually strolled away back into the woods!
I don’t expect anybody to believe this, but my partner, who was sitting about 20 yards away, witnessed it.
And that, my friend, will not be forgotten!
By the way, please don’t give up on getting published! I also used to think it was impossible, but since it was one of my dreams, I made a promise to myself back in 2012 that come hell or high water, I’d get something published.
Fortunately, somebody turned me onto a site called duotrope that lists thousands of places to get published! With them, I ended up getting three short stories published before the year was out!
You really should check it out. They even have a free 30 day (or longer?) trial basis!

Greetings, Lena!
This is good, and having been born and raised in Alaska, I can relate to this! When I was just a kid I'd sit in the snow in my underwear (it was a game I used to play with a friend to see who could last the longest!). Wait. Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. Anyway, I do know how snow can affect people physically. Some folks say that if you're caught in a snowstorm, you should actually bury yourself under the snow as a way of insulating your body. That might work for a few minutes, but eventually your body heat will start to escape and your internal core temperature will quickly plummet! And yes, people have been known to go to sleep up!
Overall, nice job! But it was that last line that really made this shine!

*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Greetings, Ari!
For your first piece on here, this isn't bad. I like the fear you put into this as your character tries to evade her stalker, but you did a little more telling than showing*. And that ending almost seemed a bit humorous; how would you know NOT to wear heels if you were being chased by a stalker? In other words, it's not everyday you get chased by a stalker! See what I mean?
But that's kind of irrelevant. You still made your point.
One major niggle:
'I thought I could felt the warm breath, the back of my neck.' (I think this would be better: 'I thought I could feel the warm breath on the back of my neck.')
My only other suggestion would be to lengthen this, but seeing as this is just your first piece and you wanted to get something in your portfolio, I wouldn't be too concerned about that. You have plenty of time to write other stories!
Kee ponw ritin gon, Ari, and welcome to WdC! If you like to write, then you're going to love it here!

*CakeB* HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.*CakeP*

Hello there, Audra, and happy 11th *Shock2* 'birthday' on here!
I'm kind of known for writing horror and dark stories, and this is certainly dark! And very well told!
What's weird is I think I've heard of something like this happening before on one of those real life detective shows or something. The idea of this young man just wanting to be acknowledged by this 'queen', so to speak, was a cool plot, and then the irony of her not knowing him at all (even after sitting beside him in all those classes for all those years? What's up with that?) costing her her life was a good, albeit sad, way to end it.
But at least she wound up in a perfect resting place! *Smirk2*
Nice job, Audra! Especially for such a short piece!
Kee ponw ritin gon, thanks for sharing this, and may you have many more wonderful 'birthdays' on WdC!
PS-I checked out your bio and saw what you said about having to write with no desires of becoming famous: 'For even if an author's writing speaks to no one else, it speaks to its creator.' (I've said this to a lot of people when they have no one else to talk to. Just writing one's feelings down is proven to be very cathartic!)

Bon jour, Kevin!
This is kind of a weird story, but at least it was weird enough to win! Congratulations!
Cameron and Dustin seem to have it made up there on the tower on that gorgeous summer day, and I like the idea of them being so 'neighborly' to their neighbor down below by not urinating down that pipe. But I'm not sure how the broken windows fit into this.
Regardless, like I said, it was good enough to win, and it even has a sort of moral to it at the end!
Kee ponw ritin gon, Kevin! 'Twas a pleasure to read, and have a great day!

*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Aloha, THorny!
This isn't bad for your first piece on here, but it's also not something I see a very many Newbies doing (for their first piece on here) Most Newbies start out with a story or a poem, so this is a first for me.
I like the idea of giving readers different choices of where they want to go with the story, but I think it might get a little confusing for you to do this. As I said, this isn't something that's done too often around here. That's not to say you shouldn't do it, but I just want you to know.
One thing about this that I'm concerned with is writing it in the second person point of view. I honestly think it would be better if you wrote it in the third person POV. The 2nd person is rarely used, whereas the 3rd person is the most used.
Either way, at least you've got something in your portfolio now and you can call yourself a Registered Author!

Greetings, Dreamer!
Considering what you were talking about in this, I think your handle might be very appropriate since if feels like you were dreaming when you were writing this, and that's pretty much what it's about, right?
You went kind of deep with this, but I can sort of see what you're talking about. By those lights I think you mean the stars and how tiny we are as human beings when compared to everything else in the universe. This is true, but you kind of put a negative spin on it. There's a lot more to us when you really get down to it!
As for the emptiness, I'm not sure what you mean, other than we all feel that way sometimes.
There's a few missing words and punctuation niggles in this, Dreamer, but overall it's a good 'thinking' piece, so I'll let you get back to your lunch before that emptiness settles in on you again! *Smile*

This is great! And I think there's probably millions of Americans who feel the same way and hope something like this could happen!
Our white house has gone to the dogs since this last so-called 'president' took office, and I can't think of any other way to fix it other than to have an asteroid hit Washington, D.C. directly!
For such a short piece, you said a LOT!

Hi there, Blue Jay!
I thought this was great, and I can see why it won the Daily FF contest!
I like how you used that prompt phrase--that's exactly what people would hear on the old telephone party lines when two women were sharing their latest gossip--and I actually had pity for poor Henry!
But at least he was just letting it go in one ear and out the other!
"Uh huh." *Rolling*
Great job, my friend! The spelling and grammar were flawless, and that ending was perfect!

Wuzzup, Trailerpark?
Sadly, I've had all too many of mornings like poor Michelle (I spent most of yesterday sleeping on my couch! *Laugh*), but luckily I haven't any blackouts concerning 'dates' or what-have-you. In fact, it would be kind of creepy to have a good friend tell me what I did with a date from the night before.
Apparently it worked it out well for Michelle, though, but I don't know that a greasy cheeseburger would be very tempting on a hangover!
Great spelling and grammar and use of the prompt words, and the whole piece read smoothly.
Kee ponw ritin gon, TB, and have a wonderful day!

Hi there, Dark Warrior!
Caught this on a Read & Review, and glad I did.
I realize this is the beginning to something a lot bigger, and so far it's an interesting concept. The idea of being a nomad, so to speak, after being exiled from this so-called 'Utopia City' is certainly something you can build on, and I encourage you to follow through with it, if you haven't already. Lord knows how many big 'projects' I've started and set aside to just gather dust! *Laugh*
'He was serving during the time I was three(.) at that time he only knew two others' (there's a few other grammar niggles in here, but I think if you went back over this you'll spot them)
As I said, you've got a good idea, so maybe you should run with it.
Kee ponw ritin gon, Dark Warrior, and have a great weekend!

Aloha, Linn!
This is a nice tale of kids being kids and the relationship they have with each other, even in semi-alarming situations. The reader can tell how much Marek's brother and sister mean to him, and it even had a happy ending with Steve's reference to that old show, The Waltons (dang, I'm getting old! *Shock2*).
Great spelling and grammar, and you did a nice job with the prompt.

Ahoy, Fairport!
As a reader/writer/and lover of the dark (and horror), I thought this was great! It reminds me of the old Cathedrals like Notre Dame (ironically), where so much history as taken place over the ages. What's more is that some famous religious people are buried either inside or under some of those cathedrals, so who knows what ghosts could be lurking there? *Ghost*
But you're going for the truly dark, where the cathedral is calling to embrace the souls who've gone to hell. Right? Am I close? Or is it calling to take them to Hell?
Regardless, it's very well written, and I honestly think this could be published somewhere!
Kee ponw ritin gon, Fairport! Thanks for sharing this, and have wonderfully frightening fabulous day!

Wuzzup, Teresa?
I like this. It’s a nice little sci/fi piece that reminded me a little of Thelma and Louise (only because of the two women traveling around the country in that car), and that ‘clone’ ending was pretty good. For them both to be marry this guy and then find out he was a clone at his funeral would certainly be unsettling, but then to have his other clones instructed to kill them would be just flat our freaky!
Run, girls, run!
The spelling and grammar were flawless (thank you!), but I do have a couple of comments/questions. Don’t worry; I don’t expect you to answer them, but maybe think about them? I hate when people knit-pick my stories to death over trivial crap, especially little short stories like this!
One: with that many clones running around, it’s kind of weird that they both married the exact same one (I know, he was the only clone in their town), and two: just think if one or both of them had a child by Phil!
Sorry. This piece just got me to thinking, which for me can be a very dangerous thing! *Laugh* *Crazy*

This isn't bad for short FF piece. I like the idea of Zan helping Hunter maintain his sobriety after all that time, even though he was giving up on it. To be honest, I've been in Hunter's shoes before, so I know what it was like.

Greetings, Teresa, and happy belated 2nd 'birthday' on here!
I totally agree that the eyes are the door to a person's soul, and after looking into your beautiful eyes, I can see that you are an ANGEL! I'm not hitting on you or anything, but they really are beautiful. From what I can tell, they're hazel, right? Or maybe grey? Regardless, to see you staring back at me like this is a little weird, but in a good way.
I'm not sure how old that picture is or how old you were when it was taken, but that's beside the point. Those eyes would make a lot of men melt in their shoes!
OK. I'm done. Wait. Not yet. Still staring into your eyes. Want to freak out? Check out my picture in my bio and stare into MY eyes! I dare ya! *Laugh*
OK. Now I'm done.

*CakeB* HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.*CakeP*

Hi there, Archie, and happy 16 *Shock2* 'birthday' on here!
I also love sandwiches, and for better or worse, sometimes I eat them for lunch AND dinner, day after day!
You did a nice job of letting us know your own personal favorites, and that one about the toasted peanut butter and jelly one really hit home! When I was a kid I used to make my father's lunch for him when he went to work, and his personal favorite was toasted PB & Js! At that time, I used to think he was the only one in the whole world who ate those!
I can't say I've ever tried liverwurst, but maybe one day I might. When my wife used to make my sandwiches for me when I worked, I loved a good ham, salami, tomato and cheese (sharp cheddar) sandwich on white bread slathered with mayo!Trouble with those was that I had a really physical job, and after drinking a can of Dr. Pepper with those sandwiches I'd almost die from heartburn!
Anyway, nice piece, my friend, and thank you for sharing your expertise (and 'recipes') about sandwiches.
Kee ponw ritin gon, and may you have many more wonderful 'birthdays' on WdC!

*CakeB* HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.*CakeP*

Hi there, David, and happy 10th *Shock2* 'birthday' on here!
I'm not sure if this is from your real life or not (although I think it is) but I thought it was really neat, and I can absolutely relate to it!
You did a great job of describing that lonely Christmas tree while you were living in your truck, but you didn't let that get you down, and instead took solace in your little cactus Christmas tree. I love it when people see the simple things in life and realize how much those 'little things' can mean to them, and you did an excellent job showing that here!
I too have lived in my vehicle, on more than one occasion, and I also had a pretty shabby Christmas tree once. It had like 4 branches on it and was only maybe 2 feet tall, but it was mine, and just to be 'different' I hung it upside down from my roof. I found out later that some people in certain parts of the world do this, and it even goes back to the middle ages!

Back to your piece!
The meter seemed a bit bumpy, but that's irrelevant since the main topic was your cactus Christmas tree, and that's all that really counts, right? And like you, that shabby little Christmas tree of mine is something I'll remember the most!
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend! Thanks for sharing this, and may you have many more wonderful 'birthdays' on WdC!

*CakeB* HAPPY WDC ACCOUNT ANNIVERSARY FROM "Anniversary ReviewsOpen in new Window.*CakeP*

Greetings, Jody, and happy belated 3rd WdC 'birthday' to you!
Ah, yes. The dark side of love. What more could you ask than for some looney woman setting fire to your house while anticipating you asking her out on a date?
OK. Maybe it was her own house, but still...
Seriously though, for a short 100 worder, I thought this was cool. At least she's a clean freak, although I don't really seeing her being able to keep up with all those red hot embers falling down that fast.
But at least she's trying, and that's all that really counts, right? *Laugh*
Too bad there's not an image you could use for this: some girl in a dress, perhaps an old ragged one, obliviously sweeping up the floor as those embers fall around her while the rest of the house is going up in flames all around her?
You missed out, Frank!
Great job, Jody!
Kee ponw ritin gon, thanks for sharing this, and have a really groovy day!

*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Hi there, Jenn!
As a lover of football and a disliker (for lack of a better--or worse--word) of the Patriots, I thought this wasn't too bad. I still laugh when I think of their 'undefeated' season coming to such a justified end! *Laugh*
But you're right when you said this was going to be a sad story, and let me tell you why. I AM that little boy!
My parents divorced when I was just 8 years old. Mind you this was back in 1973, and the laws have changed a lot since then, but I too had to go into the judge's chambers and answer that same question. For God's sake, how is an 8 year old kid supposed to answer that?
Anyway, I knew my mother was having some drinking problems and at the time I was living with my father, who had a steady job and a roof over our heads. It was for that reason, and that reason only, that I said I wanted to go with my dad.
And so the judge awarded custody to my father.
It crushed me, and it definitely crushed my mother too, but the really hard part came about 2 weeks later when my mother called me (I could tell she'd been drinking) and asked me why I didn't choose her. Before I could even answer--I'm not even sure I would have answered her--she asked my why I didn't love her anymore.
Again, I was only 8 years old!
My childhood wasn't all that good. What really tore me apart was that she passed away 3 years later when I was 11.
Sorry. This story just really hit home for me, so I wanted to get that off my chest. Not that I haven't many times since then, but sometimes I need to get it out once awhile.
Well done, Jenn!
Kee ponw riting on, and welcome to WdC! If you like to write, then you're going to love it here!

Greetings, Prosperous Snow!
I didn't catch on that this was from the movie until I was about 1/2 way through it (*FacePalm* I've really got to start reading bylines!), but I already thought it was pretty good!
But as for the subject of insomnia, I can totally understand that! I've only been getting about 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night lately, and even that can hardly be considered sleep!
You did a nice job with the meter, and the whole piece parodied the song well. Just those first two lines of the chorus I think most writers can relate to about no sleepin' and the sandman don't come creepin'!
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend! It was a pleasure to read, and have a fantastic evening!

Howdy, Whiskerface (Sheila?)!
I like this. In fact, you might have answered my question why my wife divorced me! *Laugh*
Well, at least part of it anyway.
I’ve also questioned many things in this vast universe, a few of which I documented in my piece, "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window., so to come across this was kind of treat for me.
I’m guessing this was for a contest of some sort since some of the words and phrases are bolded, but regardless, Charlie has poses some good, although a bit strange questions. That one about the ‘ad-vice’ was particularly interesting.
You did a great job with the dialogue, but what made this shine was that ending!
Nice job, my friend!
One tiny niggle:
“I(’)ve just come back from the dentist.”
Kee ponw ritin gon, Whiskerface! Thanks for sharing this, and have a great day!

Greetings, MFrederick!
It seems you have one heckuva a love for your Fruity Pebbles, and it appears there was nothing that was going to get in your way from having some of your favorite cereal, cabinet be damned!
Seriously though, nonsensical or not, it was still a fun and interesting read. I’ve been known to write some ‘different’ things like this myself, as well as having my own penchant for a certain cereal. Growing up during the 70s, I couldn’t get enough of Count Chocula (I was also a big Cap’n Crunch fan!).
Overall, not bad, and certainly worth the read. Good job, Frederick!
Comments and suggestions:
'not hungry at all' to 'I need food now!'(,) so quickly.
‘This garden contained had some of the most ripe...’ (don't need both of those-one or the other!)
‘I can fit about 1/4 of a box of cereal into this bad boy.(I)
‘Fruity pebbles, my favorite pajamas, and writing...life is beautiful.’ (So true—yes, indeed, some of the simplest things in life really are…beautiful! *Laugh*)
‘What started off as a beam of light from the heavens(,) ended up being a long, drawn-out experience...’
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend! Good luck with 'Cassiopeia's place', and have a great day!

*BalloonR* Welcome to WDC from "Newbie Welcome WagonOpen in new Window.! *BalloonR*

Greetings, MY Hauger!
First off, I think it’s great that you found something that sparked your literary Muse, and I strongly encourage you to follow through this with writing endeavor! As a published writer (I haven’t had any books published, so I don’t consider myself an author—yet!), I encourage all new writers to go for their dreams! I’m also glad that you know that success won’t happen overnight. It will take time, but as long as you keep on writing, you’ll get better, and please know that that dream is certainly achievable for anybody who has the patience and endurance to try for it!
And I’ll tell you something else, too. It WILL be a fun journey, and you’ve come to the right place if you want feedback and encouragement while you do this!
I look forward to reading your stories!
