Gary let out a sleepy sigh as he wiped the crud from his eyes and sat up in bed. It was nice being able to sleep in on a weekday, but unfortunately it was because he was currently between jobs and had nowhere to be. Rent was beginning to look a little tight, and he was staring down the possibility of having to move back in with his parents if he didn’t get back on his feet soon.
As he finished rubbing his eyes and his vision came into focus, Gary nearly jumped out of his skin as a floating text box greeted him right in front of his face.
“Woah! What the heck?!” Gary stammered, flailing his arms in front of him to try and swipe it away. However, they passed right through the message as if it weren’t even there. Taking a moment to collect himself, Gary took a closer look to read what was on the screen.
“Welcome to Real Life RPG! Need a hand in life? You have been selected to play our open beta program. Explore all the endless possibilities and grow your potential through your own actions and decisions! Earn EXP by completing real life events and level up in life!”
“I’ve been selected? By whom?!” Gary wondered, but no answer followed. “This feels a little demeaning that whoever picked me thinks I’m such a sad sack, but I am curious to learn more…” Gary considered himself a bit of a gamer and understood basic elements of RPGs. It probably had a little to do with why he was such a recluse.
Gary turned and sat on the edge of his bed, letting his feet touch the floor. “So how do I get started?” he asked internally, “Do I get to see my stats?” Immediately on cue, a screen popped up before him.
Name: Gary Williams Gender: Male Age: 30 Occupation: Unemployed Stats: STR: 2 DEX: 5 INT: 4 LUK: 1 SPD: 2 Traits: Mas/Fem: 80-20 Skills: None
“Unemployed with no skills… Why do I feel like whatever this is, it’s trying to roast me rather than help me?” Gary groaned while scratching his head, “Strength and speed are both low… maybe I should start working out more… and don’t even get me started on that luck stat- I have no clue how I’m going to raise that!” There also seemed to be some kind of gauge on his overall masculinity/femininity scale that seemed slightly unsettling to him. Would his actions have an impact on it?
Gary quickly got dressed, eager to try and figure out ways to experiment with the system. Maybe he could go walk around the park or the mall looking for something to do. Or maybe he could go look for a job.
