Chapter #7

Decide to go out and explore

    by: shell_shocke Author IconMail Icon
Feeling adventurous, Gary set his mind on going out to explore and see how this supposed ‘Real Life RPG’ interacted with real world elements and situations. But first, he went into his small apartment kitchen and quickly whipped up a sandwich. He could hardly consider himself a chef as this was more or less the extent of his culinary ability, but it was sufficient as he scarfed the sandwich down. A ‘ding’ suddenly went off in Gary’s mind, nearly causing him to spit out his food in shock, before another text box appeared in his field of vision.

“Congratulations! Skill unlock requirement conditions have been met! Cooking skill level 1 has been obtained!”

“Well, that’s handy,” Gary mused, “So if I keep making food, will my ability continue to level up? Maybe I should go pick up some groceries at the store and try it out later.”

Once he finished eating, Gary cleaned up the kitchen area and set his plate in the dishwasher. Another ‘ding’ went off.

“Congratulations! Skill unlock requirement conditions have been met! Cleaning skill level 1 has been obtained!”

“I don’t really care about that one as much, but it could still be useful I guess,” Gary chuckled. “At least it affirms that if I keep performing certain actions, there is potential to gain skills from them. This could be fun!”

Not wanting to waste any time, Gary set out of his apartment building and began walking down the street. He lived near a neighborhood park, so he decided to take a stroll through it. He passed by a small playground where an assortment of children was frolicking about while their mothers watched from a distance while gossiping amongst themselves. He passed by a couple of people walking their dogs; one person threw a frisbee and their dog rapidly chased it down with a leaping catch.

On the opposite side of the park, Gary noticed a couple of kids bickering underneath a tree. One of them seemed on the edge of tears while the other seemed focused on something up in the tree branches. Taking a closer look, it seemed like they had flown their kite into the tree. Fortunately, the branch in question wasn’t too high up for his adult body to reach and he walked over to help them out. “Need a hand, guys?” he asked them.

The kids’ squabbling suddenly shifted its focus onto Gary and he had a hard time keeping up with their complaints. “I told Billy that he shouldn’t go too close to the trees!” one of them whined, which just set the other one off with retorts.

“Settle down guys, let me help you out!” Gary interjected, trying to stop the quarrel. Gary took the kite’s string from the kids and began untangling it from the branches, tugging on it while being careful enough to make sure nothing snagged. Eventually his persistence paid off and the kite was liberated from the tree. The kids celebrated and shouted, “Thanks mister!” before running off to play with their kite some more. Gary smiled, not expecting some big reward anyway, happy to have done a good deed. On cue, another screen popped up before him.

“New Trait unlocked! Player’s Good Samaritan score has increased by 5 points!
Congratulations! Skill unlock requirement conditions have been met! Childcare skill level 1 has been obtained!”

“Better than nothing, I guess,” Gary pondered to himself. “Don’t know how that skill will be useful to me, but maybe if I keep doing things to help people, my stats will keep going up!”

As he reached the other side of the park, the road led toward a busier commercial area of the city. There were plenty of kinds of shops he could visit, including the mall a few blocks away. Alternatively, Gary could go check out the library and see if reading some books would accomplish anything.

You have the following choices:

1. Go to the library

*Pen*
2. Go shopping

*Pen*
3. Something else

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
