Inner Gift

About a serving and giving spirit

What is that inner gift that lights her face
And brings compassion’s sweetness to her eyes,
A sort of wistful charm and winning grace
That fills her heart and in her spirit lies?

That gift is serving and the will to serve
That gift is giving and the will to give.

And when the sages pen their histories true,
And typify in verse how each has fared,
The noblest truth, and most endearing too
Will be the simple sentiment, “She cared.”
