Nothing Without It

A hand appeared in front of my bleary eyes. It held my favorite gold mug. I inhaled deeply.

“Is that coffee?” I managed to mumble.

The hand set it down in front of me. It added just a dollop of cream and a dash of sweetness. I couldn’t get my hands around it fast enough. I inhaled the familiar fragrance again.

“Drink up so we can discuss something important, Molly.” said the man behind the hand.

I took a tentative sip, then a bigger one. Before I knew it the cup was half-empty. The hand poured more of elixir of life into my cup and doctored it just how I like it.

“Are you able to speak?” Travis said teasingly.

“Not quite yet, keep it coming,” I told him.

So, after a couple of more refills, I managed to raise my eyes to look across the table at the love of my life.

“What did you want to discuss?” I finally asked.

He slid a velvet box across the table, then opened the lid. A beautiful ring with sapphires and diamonds winked at me. Travis picked up my left hand, pulled the ring out of the box and put it on my third finger.

“Will you?” he asked softly.

I started to cry. I grabbed his face and pulled it to mine. We kissed.

“Does that answer your question?”

“Not quite, I’ve been looking forward to the ‘yes, I will marry you’ part,” he said.

So, I repeated each word, punctuated with kisses.

“Whatever possessed you to give the ring to me so early in the morning?”

“I figured I could ply you with coffee just enough so you would say yes without thinking up excuses not to,” Travis explained.

I started laughing. Then Travis joined in.
