Was a graduate student
At the University of Washington

His favorite time of year
Was October
When the leaves changed colors

He fell in love
With the lonely October squirrels
Dancing across the campus.

And the lonely squirrels
Rushed about.
To finish hoarding their nuts.
For the winter,

Avoiding the feral cats
And the hawks
Ready to eat them for breakfast.


He even started feeding
The squirrels
Much to the amusement
Of his classmate.

Who commented,

“I don’t understand
Why do you like the squirrels
So much.

To me, squirrels are just rodents –
Tree rats with a good PR agent.”

Jake smiled.
And continued
Feeding the lonely squirrels.
