Word Count Obsession

I will write 2,000 words a day

It seemed so easy to write and say:
This year I will write 2,000 words a day.

I sat down at the computer and began to write
a short story about a ship of light;
the plot was so simple
that it could not fail
to generate the required word count
that is
until the ship got caught in a comet's tail
at the moment my electricity went out
and I forgot what the plot was all about.

It seemed so easy to write and say:
I will write 2,000 words a day;
however,
it did not turn out that way.
