THE RACE OF SINHALA



Wijaya came to Sri Lanka

over two thousand years ago, from India

along with his several fellowmen

to capture and build his empire



When he came and saw Kuweni

who was the queen with all her beauty

Wijaya wanted to make her his bride

he did just that and made Lanka proud



Thus started the race 'Sinhala'

meaning, 'the one with the blood of a lion'

we have a culture of over two millennium

'a very old race' as you have guessed!



Sri Lanka was governed by kings

not a few, but hundreds of them!

the last one was called 'Rajasinghe'

who fell to the mighty of English soldiers



here, we have superb ancient sites

dating back to the times of kings

they built massive temples,

stone sculptures, depicting Buddha



gigantic water tanks for irrigation,

monasteries with libraries for students,

medicinal bath boats for the sick,

massive palaces, to name a few



gone are the days of the kings

yet we can still see what they left

when we go to ancient sites

they still whisper in our ears.
