Alice is sent to live with Mrs Prentice who everybody says is really a witch.

Mrs Prentice lives at Hilltop Cottage where everything is crooked. The villagers say she is a witch and are afraid of her. Only little Alice Murray, who delivers bread for her father, is not really afraid and she is about to become Mrs Prentice's assistant.
