SELF-PORTRAIT

She used to hide her heart between the lines
and underneath bed sheets
scared of the stranger in the mirror
she writes long letters to friends in distant countries
only to forget them at the bottom of her handbag
she painted the walls yellow
to fit an old dress
shining through her memory like a sunflower
she ran away from home just to find the child
still sleeping in her mind
