A poem about rivers crossed in a life time. |
| So Many Rivers I have crossed so many rivers in a long and wondrous life. Not that I didn't have troubles; Yes, I saw plenty of strife. The first stream, little Guyandotte, but it seemed not little then. She covered pain of abuse. A new life I could begin. Next, the beautiful Kanawha, lovely to sail and serene. This long crossing was the best one, new life awaited, so clean. Years later, I left the Kanawha, my spirits, alone, so low. Lived near mighty Potomac, 'til I knew which way to go. Some measure life in minutes, some count the time year by year. I have measured by the crossings; Great rivers have brought me here. Finally, the great Mississippi, the end of my life is near. I'll close my eyes and remember all the river crossings, no fear. |
