This Is Islam

I open the sacred book of a religion other than my own,
I read its verses,
the phrase

“… there is no God but God …”

reverberates through my mind
and penetrates my soul.

O people of the Book,

I hear wind chimes in the morning air
like voices from the minarets
calling to prayer.

This is Islam, the religion,
and the Qur’an, the book,
revealed through the Prophet Muhammad,
who was descended from Abraham;
Ramadan, the month of fast,
giving up food from sunup to sundown;
Mecca, the city of pilgrimage;
men and women praying to Allah,
worshipping God through one of His names.

People of the Book,
these are shared concepts:
One Divine Creator of the Universe;
Abraham, common ancestor to all our prophets;
prayer;
fasting;
our Holy Books and our religions
revelations direct from God.
