A poem written 23 years into my relationship

IN YOUR EYES


I never knew safe
till I found your arms
or what
quiet sounded like
till you turned down the noise

I never knew music
till you held me to you
that first night
while we danced and

I felt perfect
in your eyes

Before you
I was searching
Waiting, I imagine, for love
in full regalia
dressed in shiny promises

Then you came and softly
wrapped my heart in your velvet soul
in your warmth and

made me perfect
in your eyes

I could never have known then
that you would swallow me so completely
so passionately
and hold me as tightly as you did
and do

When I tell you that I love you
All this time later
When old love is best love
When I melt
still
at the sound of your voice
and love feels all that it should feel

Know that
forever

you are perfect

in my eyes
