Wouldn't the second example be purely based on sentence structure? "The men went into the living room after dinner." would be a way of removing a comma, but if "After dinner" is put before "the men went into the living room." it seems like a comma is necessary. It seems like the use of a comma is mostly due to how the words of a sentence are ordered.
