More Updates and Improvements to Writing.Com:

1) Book Manager Update

The book manager got a glam-over, clean-up.

There's now a more proper toolbar that allows you to turn on/off all the gizmos and doo-dads, like bulk ordering, access restrictions and more. Tags have been added as well. Clicking the tags let members manage the individual entries as well as filter the entire book's entries by tags. The bulk system has tags available, too. Check 5 entries, click the "Tag" tool from the bottom and add tags to all 5 at once.

(
Shout-outs to Brandiwyn🎶 Author Icon for the initial tag request and Amethyst Angel ♡ Author Icon for the bulk tagging request that led to this latest beautification. *Heart* )

2) Item Edit "Time" Update

Previously,
every edit to an item updated its modified time.

Now, only changes to the item's
title, brief description, or main body will automatically update the time.

You'll find a checkbox at the bottom of the item edit form for the modified time. It will be checked automatically when you change any of those three listed areas. If you didn't change any of them, you can still opt to update the time by ticking the box.

(
This has been tested, but until it's been out there for a good bit, please don't rush out and test this with some item you haven't edited in 10 years because you didn't want to lose the modified time from 2016. *Laugh* That's a terrible test case. A forum you edited last week is a much better test case. Please feel free to report any bugs in "Bug Reporting.)

3) Three New Emoticons!

It's PIE for everyone!
All kinds of PI(E)!
(and just in time for Pi Day March 14!)

Awesome it's pie time.

Portfolio Update

Your Portfolio Tools and Highlighted Items have been given an updated look and feel on your portfolio page! The tools themselves haven't changed, but they should now be easier to spot. Just a small tweak to make navigating and organizing your work a little smoother.

Search Added to Portfolios
You can now search within your portfolio or someone else's right from the portfolio page! This IS new... enjoy!

(Click
Portfolio / Portfolio from the left navigation to see the changes.)
Wow, love the new look and the search tool!
I *Heart* this so much:

It's clean and very obvious. So, feel free to disregard my suggestion about the port organizer.
*Bigsmile*

Details: "Each day around 12pm NOON WDC time, one of our dedicated volunteer judges will judge the previous day's entries and post a new writing prompt. Entries for each new prompt must be posted by 11:59am WDC time the next day. Entries that follow ALL of the prompt requirements will be judged according to the creativity in responding to the writing prompt only. This means that grammatical errors WILL NOT be a determining factor in deciding the winner!"

Wild Wednesday

Let's get crazy...

Comment with a single sentence that's just
wild or wacky.

~Lifelessons~ Author Icon - I feel you, I feel like I'm constantly playing hide and seek with my patience, where I'm the seeker. And losing my patience in the process even more!
Wren_Loves_Storys! Author Icon - there it is!!
Bonus points if someone else wants to read it.

Idk, but if it's in the font that was used for the title of

Spring is nature's New Year
I'm celebrating the New Year on March 21.
flash Author Icon - me too, buddy me too😔
I always thought the new year should start with the spring equinox. The problem is, the southern hemisphere or the northern?
The Wicca New Year falls on the winter solstice.
Pressure or passion — which moves your pen faster? Let’s compare styles.

I do not like deadlines. I would rather work off of inspiration, but I work in a world of deadlines, and I drink because of that.
Wren_Loves_Storys! Author Icon - So true! Deadlines are synonymous with worry and seem to be more unhelpful than productive.
No, although they are important.

Beginnings? Middles? Endings? Let’s normalize the hard parts.

Beginnings. Not necessarily the beginnings of the actual first few chapters, that's were I have lots of ideas, but how to start off the beginning of a chapter and get it going... That I can find difficult.

Explaining what the book is about. When someone finds out that I like to write, and they ask, "What are your books about?" I never know how to respond. The new series I've been working on is especially hard. I might say, "They're about squirrels, and other creatures in the forest... they fight villains, rescue captives, and make unlikely friends." And then people look at me like I'm crazy. I think I need to figure out a better way to describe the Prone To Wander series.
The part of writing that challenges me the most is using grammar correctly and keeping people people interested and excited about my stories as I am.
Nobody knew we'd be asking for this...

Dad Author Icon - oh alright. thanks for replying :)

unwritten Author Icon - *Tips hats*. My pleasure! *realizes that he isn't wearing a hat, wonders just what he tipped, looks for waitress to tip, forgets what he is doing, and puts the phone in the frij, just for good measure.*
Dad Author Icon - :sob laughs:
A look at how tightening the elements of your story increases its impact.
What sentence are you emotionally attached to that your story could live without?
actually none. the way the story was written there are no sentences that are unnecessary. Those were edited out in draft 2-3 after careful streamlining.
My characters tend to use lines that I have heard somewhere so I have to be careful of sources.
Ordinary places hold extraordinary stories. Show us.

Lilli ☕ prepares her morning cup of coffee.
SpiderGal Author Icon - Momma used to say, "I baked a cake for my uncles, but the aunts/ants got it first." *Wink*
"If I take one more bite, I'll have to go to confession."
A newletter on hero types.
Do you choose what type of hero your character is, or do they develop during the story?
S🤦‍♂️ Author Icon - Exactly so!!
A little of both. I like to plan characters as completely as possible before starting a book. Some times a character will change during the story depending on where the story leads me.
My characters tend to develop into heroes over time.
Often, the most memorable heroes in the stories we love begin as individuals who are initially considered “nobodies.” That origin is what makes them relatable.

It was reminded of something I once heard in a speech:
“Have you ever noticed that heroes and villains often share similar backstories? The difference lies in how they respond to them.
The villain says, ‘This hurt me, so I will hurt others.’
The hero says, ‘This hurt me, so I will protect others from experiencing the same pain.’”
Make us see it, hear it, feel it. Short and powerful.

Dave Author Icon - thanks. I'll email you soon.
Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.
Scratch.
Well, that was new.

The tools lining the wall gleam silver. When I run my hands across them, they're freezing.
Scrape. Wooden planks line the ceiling, brown spatter dripping off of them still. And finally, the best part, a cage, silver red brown stains on the ground, soft croaks filling the room.

Scrape.
The air was damp and smelled of mold. Underfoot things that crunched impeded my progress. The light became dimmer and I finally had to stop for breath.
