Winter has arrived in the Sierra Nevada mountains and my mind soars over snowy wastes and jagged rocky crags. The scent of wet evergreen settles in the valley and I hide my cheek from the biting winds. The hopeful flame of summer has been snuffed beneath the ice, strangled by the pale winter sun. Its life giving warmth extinguished until the budding flowers of spring herald its rebirth in the new year.
