| Long ago I had this story idea where there was an earthquake season (it wasn't a horror genre, like you might think). It's come to mind again because the field behind my house is being developed and the diggers and rollers working there make it feel like there's a quake every few minutes for a number of hours on end!!! |
| Across the street from my house, there's an office park they're demolishing to rebuild as a massive warehouse space. For weeks our windows have been rattling and our house shaking because they're apparently using explosives to knock down the main structural supports of each existing building. The first few times, we thought they were earthquake tremors! |

| It's now about quarter past 6 (PM) here in New Zealand on Christmas Day - and it's just ticked over to Christmas Day for (some of) you folk in the USA. Here, of course, it's summer - and today has been nice, sunny with blue sky and white tufts of cloud. The breeze is cooling. It was hotter last summer, but often January/February are our hottest summer months now. As someone suffering from (peri)menopause, seriously, the heat's a pain. It's hot enough with a hot flush Oops, sorry, slight side story there!! Hope everyone on WDC has a lovely day, no matter how you celebrate it Merry Christmas everyone. Happy (soon) Boxing Day to the Commonwealth....) Update at 18:38 on Boxing Day - just so you're not jealous of the heat..... heavy rain all day where I am, snow in the south island. Temps muggy but generally cooler than they have been. The usual..... really |
Along with all the amazing quarter-century celebrations kicking off today, this contest is running for September too:
Your character works at a soup kitchen. Your character rescues a 'hater' from a situation. Cougar |
| Hello good people.... Can someone remind me of the contests that accept previously written (even awarded) items? My brain has failed me! |
| Well, it ends tomorrow for the round that allows old items but I have "The Weekly Quickie Contest" [18+] with an old item round going. |
| Question time!! If you could recommend only ONE book to others to read, what would it be? (I was thinking to myself this was easy and then I went.... oh no, it's not. I mean, X book of that genre, Y book of this genre. But.... what if you only had ONE option?????) |
| May round of "The LGBT Writing Contest - closed" now open: In honour of this 3-letter month, the prompts are also all 3-letters! Web Pin Sun Woohoo: this round is part of

| Amused myself tonight by looking over the view counts for my writing; the top counts are all from between 2013-2016, so I guess time helps. Despite the topic of the top-viewed item maybe having something to do with it, I am still surprised it's top because... it's poetry and I am no poet! (The third highest item viewed is also poetry - in fact a sort of 'prequel' to the one below!)
Thrilled that my favourite short story is the most viewed piece of fiction.
Anyone else ever looked at counts? Some of the things I wrote around the time of those above are nowhere near 3 digits, not even if they've been contest entries. |
| Belated thanks to those who gave me happy birthday blessings. It was my 50th, which still feels rather odd since I'm sure I'm only about 40, maybe even less. |

In an absolutely unbelievable turn of events.... this contest is open for December
Below are the prompts for the round: A favourite book (As they say.... book lovers never go to bed alone.) Amor vincit omnia Sand Aiming to be a bit more active with it in 2025..... |
| What's the most expensive thing in your house this year? Mine, you ask? My cat. $819 today for teeth clean and blood tests - all coming back very well, which is awesome news since she's only a few weeks off turning 16. But... this year, her total is around $12,000. Would I ever decline to pay? Not on your nelly!! She is my heart and soul, and you can actually read about her, funnily enough:
Despite having woken up from the anaesthetic about 5 hours ago, she's still pretty spacey - but eating and drinking and very, very snuggly. |
| aww kitty! This year it is probably me with my medical issues depending on what insurance covers. Other years, it varies between two cats. JiJi is my black cat and when she was 1 (she is 6 now), she had to have surgery because she ate string and it couldn't pass through. The surgery was a few thousand dollars but the options were surgery or put her down. My sister's cat, Chloe, who is staying with me had an issues with one of the discs in her spine a few years ago to the point she couldn't use one of her back legs. I paid for the emergency vet and treatments along with medication, plus helped care for her. She can walk and jump now though really shouldn't jump too high (and she's probably around 16 now too). Good to hear she is doing well. Enjoy the snuggles and purrs. |
