For those of you who, like me, are avid fans of Bald Eagles Jackie and Shadow (and I realize and respect the fact that not everyone cares), their nest was raided in mid-January to ravens and that clutch of eggs was lost. Uncharacteristically, Jackie and Shadow left the eggs unattended for several hours. Experts who work with Friends of Big Bear Valley, the organization that spearheads the eagle cam project suspect that Jackie and Shadow may have instinctively known that something was wrong with the eggs, and that's why they stopped incubating them. Meanwhile, FOBBV Executive Director Sandy Steer, the human advocate for Jackie and Shadow, died two weeks ago after a second hard-fought battle with cancer, something she understandably kept away from the public. FOBBV staff and supporters are heartbroken, but Jackie and Shadow's world keeps spinning, as does ours, and all of FOBBV's programs need support - so for Sandy, Jackie, Shadow, and all those who work at FOBBV, we keep watching, waiting, praying, daring to hope,to dream, to believe. After all, it's not that unusual for eagles to have two clutches in a season - Would it happen for Jackie and Shadow? The bond between them is so strong and solid, I often wonder if they're people dressed in eagle suits, so I set to hoping that a second clutch was possible. Just days after the nest invasion, they were seen mating, both on and off camera. Then, they began to repad the nest and bring in branches to raise and fortify the sides - I was excited, but scared to hope. Then, just when I too excited to stand it anymore, yesterday, Jackie started to push. I held my breath, leaning toward my computer screen. Finally, after what seemed like forever, Jackie let out the cry of a mother eagle who has just laid an egg. The egg will surely be joined today or tomorrow by a second one, and in a few days, possibly a third, though competition for food makes the survival of more than two eaglets doubtful. The nest is too deep for us to see inside but the FOBBV staff and volunteers will know the eggs are there, It seems appropriate that way just now; perhaps when the eaglets are born, and the time comes to name them, FOBBV will name of them Sandy - The name is unisex, and in my mind it would be the perfect way to honor the woman who, by advocating for the eagle cams, brought so much hope and joy to so many.
I love hearing about Jackie and Shadow. I'm sorry to hear about Sandy Steer and send out comforting thoughts and prayers for her loved ones and friends. I'm thankful she isn't hurting anymore and I know she is still watching over her eagles. It is lovely that they will name one of them after her. It's heartbreaking about the original eggs, but the second set is such a blessing. Just in time for Spring and warmer weather coming along.
I have a major computer driver problem, and It's driving me nuts - I'm trying to take into the shop on Thursday, and I'm praying it will be fixed on the same day, because it's really cramping my style!
You could try the hard slog of updating the drivers yourself. I once had to do that in the past when a dodgy automatic updater tool installed the wrong drivers all over the place. If you have Windows, then here's how to do it: 1/ Start Device Manager (If your account isn't an Admin one, start Control Panel, right-click on Device Manager, choose Run As Administrator and enter the admin password) 2/ Right click on each entry and choose Update Driver 3/ When it asks, choose Search automatically for drivers 4/ Work your way through the whole list In most cases, it'll tell you that your current driver is the best one, but if you have any problematic ones then it should replace them with the correct version. You might need some reboots along the way. And it'll take time and patience. Good luck. PS I have no idea what the procedure is on a Mac.
I just wrote my first solid piece in over nine years. Many thanks to Joy for creating Tap the Muse - Without the tight structure of the activity, I might not have had the courage to follow through.
