Hi all, I haven't been posting any new stories for the last few weeks as all my spare time has been spent setting up a website. I have a few articles up now, so if you want to stop by and have a look I'm at www.outofinterest.org

Hmm..I really like the theme of the site as I am a big fan of random interesting things. I know it is just starting up but adding images to the page would make it look even more inviting. Also, as the site grows, which I know it would, people like me would like to subscribe so that they get mailers about the new added stuff.

Thanks Kanish, I have paid a friend of mine who is a graphic designer to come up with a logo so it should be looking more professional soon. I have read in a few places that a writer can't expect to meet his, or her, potential until they have written a million words.

I'm not sure what my total word count is at the moment. If I had to guess, which I don't, but I'm going to anyway, I'd say I'm at around 250,000.

There's no doubt I've improved. I hope I haven't peaked yet.

What do you all think? Is a million words about right? What do you suppose your total word count is right now?
There's the rule of 10,000 that says no one can expect to be an expert at anything until they have 10,000 hours of practice at it. (or something like that) I'm not sure how many words 10,000 hours amounts to. I guess it would depend upon the person writing. If I don't have distractions I can crank out about 5,000 words in 7 - 8 hours but for the sake of argument I'll round that to 10 hours which would equate to roughly 5,000,000 words ... I think. (math class was looooong ago)
I auto-reward for reviews of all my items and it usually works just fine. I'm not wildly happy about having paid for the following review I just received though:

Maybe you can report them. Those types of reviews are gaining the system. The staffmight might be
able to do something to stop them for doing the same to others.

I've had three great entries for the first round, but I'd love to see a few more to make it more competitive. New or existing pieces accepted so long as they meet the prompt.

I found a fascinating resource which I thought you might like to take a look at. It examines your text for readability and assigns it a score out of 100 (with 100 being most readable and 1 being least). It also lets you know the youngest age group who would be expected to be able to confortably read the text (eg. 12-13).

Just go to the `direct input' tab and enter the text.

I've enjoyed comparing a few of my stories.

Thanks for link. It is interesting. I plugged in paragraph I did for spring in South Florida (see comment to Jeff Maine) and this read-able site came back with a score of 76. Some of the analytic scoring terms I don't understand....

Flesch Kincaid Grade Level 6.9
Gunning Fog Score 9.2
SMOG Index 6.8
Coleman Liau Index 8.1
Automated Readability Index 6.2
I think they each examine the text based on slightly different criteria. Most of my pieces seemed to come in at around 70-80. I pasted in some James Joyce and it came in at 50.

No it's not in my portfolio. It did start life here as a 150 word story before I re-wrote it and expanded it to 500 words.
I just received the unexpected news that I've been promoted to preferred author. It's come as a lovely surprise and I can't wait to get even more involved in this great community.
