I have this song on my iPod. As I recall, Mr. Lightfoot wrote this song after reading an article about the sinking where the name of the ship was misspelled. He felt that was disrespectful and wrote the song in response. He showed/played it for the families of the crew first and asked permission to release it. And afterwards, if I remember correctly, he donated the royalties to the families.

My youngest daughter's birthday is 10 November.

She just told me that she always thought the Edmund Fitzgerald was an old sailing ship from the 1800's. She queried her older sister about it and found that older sis thought the same thing. One of my great passions, beside music, is history. I've failed my girls.
