Words: 296 “May I come in?” "Yes." No sooner had she stepped in and closed the door than there was another soft knock. “May I come in?” "Yes!" “May I come in?” David's nerves were frazzled. When he put in the advertisement for a secretary, 'no prior experience necessary', he had thought he'd get a couple of applicants and pick one. Now it seemed the whole town didn't have prior experience in secretary-ing and wanted the job. He needed a secretary just to handle the crowd. There were young men and women, middle-aged men and women ... "If you'd just —" he began, not having the faintest idea what he was going to say next. "ATTENTION!" came a loud voice. Everyone obeyed, including David. It was impossible not to. A whistle blew, the kind the gym teacher uses to get attention. "If you know how to handle modern gadgets and old-fashioned clickey-clack typewriters, move behind the sofa. If only modern gadgets, move near the window. If only old typewriters, near the desk. If none of the above, out the door. QUICK, march! (Whistle)." The room divided up. David was standing on tip-toe, trying to understand where these orders came from. How did the person know he liked letters typed old-fashioned sometimes, in this day and age? The voice was giving further orders. David listened intently. This voice seemed to know his every need in a secretary. Three people left. Two people. Now, he was alone in the room. The person with the whistle had managed, somehow, to remain unseen so far and had exited with the others. Knock knock. “May I come in?” "Yes." Shocked silence. "Mom!" "See, I know exactly what you need and how to handle it. And I could do with some extra money. Am I hired?" |
Words: 184 "You mean that's all?" Julian was disappointed. He was also a little shocked. Ten adults - fully grown men and women, in the middle of the field, behaving like there was a crazy party going on. And all it was -- was -- they'd spotted some birds! Birds! "It's the rare sarus crane, Julian. a pair of them," his mother tried to explain, but he wasn't interested. Now if they'd seen lions or tigers, or even a giraffe or a hippo -- but birds! "Mom, may I go back to the hotel? I'm hungry." "Sure, Julian, follow the straight path back and don't wander." His mother sighed. How could she involve her son in a hobby she was so passionate about, if he just wouldn't stay? They were in the hotel room that evening when Julian suddenly got excited. It was Mom's turn to yawn. "Mom, look at the TV!" "I'm not interested in TV, Julian." "But you're on it! You and Uncle Prashant and the rest, discovering this year's batch of migrating sarus cranes!" They hugged each other. They had something in common to be excited about. |

Deadl..." I heard a song Read the words along This guy strips to the waist I read the lyrics about his tricks his thoughts ain't so chaste And, forsooth I faced the truth I'm in middle-age A hot romance at first glance just makes me disengage I find it amusing (am I winning or losing?) What they find important Am I cynical? dismissing the whimsical? Like a strict parent Well, I apologise But I can't disguise these sentiments don't move me Maybe the grapes are sour But romance has lost its power Perhaps soon something'll improve me? |

48-HOUR CHALLENGE : Media Prompt
Deadl..." What does it mean, to 'want' a person? You want the conversation. You want the shared memories. You want the new adventures, discoveries together. You want the love You want the comfort of expressing yourself to someone who understands you You want someone who knows that you like your toast slightly burnt Someone who understands your silences more than even you do Someone who won't misinterpret your words. You want someone to laugh with, cry with joke with, be serious with, be silly with To have 'those' talks - in all meaning of the word 'those'. You want someone who shares your space without crowding you Who hums along without drowning out your voice Who sings a tune you can hum to Someone who floats merrily merrily with you but knows when to take an oar rig up the sail or put the outboard motor on. So when you ask for a person as a gift You're asking for more than a present you're asking for a past and a future, too. |
I've gone into robot-practical mode. Getting the downstairs bathrooms acid-washed today. |
I like drawing circles better than squares or triangles. Shapes without corners are easier to keep tidy! ![]() |
Tried to clean up the upstairs bedroom but got overwhelmed with Dad's stuff and have left it for now. |
