THE LAST DANCE Save the last dance for me, he said, As the music swirled in the air; Eyes that smiled into mine that night Begged me to just be there. The night wore on, and soon the song Began playing, a slow romantic tune; A waltz that stole my heart As we danced around the room. Stolen kiss, midnight bliss, And a promise that he Would come back from the war And hurry on home to me. Months went by without word, My soldier said he'd save The last dance for me; Now I stand by his grave. A waltz now plays In a sadder world that gave Just a little happiness to me, Just before the grave. |
