IT'S OKAY TO CRY

When I was a little girl
Just about knee-high
I was always told that
"I didn't need to cry!"

So in my years of growing up
I kept the tears inside -
Trying never to give in
And let the teardrops slide.

I built a shell around me
That pain could not penetrate;
Then one day the shell cracked
And it was much too late!

The tears came without warning
For all the years of pain;
I cried for all I'd lost -
Things were just not the same.

And somehow I felt better -
More able to go on!
I learned it was okay to cry
But not to cry for long..

I learned to get back up
And do what must be done,
For there's always a tomorrow
And a brand new morning sun!
