what is that thing that makes us who we are

What is a man?


He, like many things,
is a mixture.

He has strength to hold on
to that which is right
yet gentleness to know
when wrong he should move.

He is firm and resolute
giving his enemy no mercy
Yet extending the hand of comfort
to those he loves.

A true man would never lord it over others,
rather instead
be the first to put those others
before him.

He would know the wisdom of words
and love truth
yet also know the true wisdom of silence
and when to use both.

He should have the ability to listen
and hear what words
have little time to say
as he listens with his eyes.

He needs to be an encourager of tired limbs and minds.
When faced with bodies that flag
he'll take the weight and bring release
coming alongside and taking the strain.

And his strength shall come
from the joy he brings
and the laughter in his heart
and knowing who he is.

But with all this something is lacking
Let's put next to him woman
Now our creation is truly complete
when the two halves become one
