What would be found at rainbow's end?

I used to wonder what lay
At rainbow’s end.
I would close my eyes and cry
And silently go around the bend.

I struggled not to weep,
Even when I had no hope at all.
My cherished hope held deep
Was some day to find a way
To rainbow’s end.

I thought I knew what was hid
Beneath the shining bands of color
Striping the heavens.
I thought I knew what I’d find
On the day I finally reached
Rainbow’s end.

Imagine my surprise
The day I closed my eyes,
And made it to rainbow’s end.
For what I found there
Was what I least expected.
