In the film franchise, Toothless is an all black dragon.

Their First Meal

The Night Fury

Offspring of Lightning and Death

Observes the human boy

Throw his knife away.

Holding a fresh salmon, the boy

Looks the dragon in the eyes,

Eager to draw closer. The Night Fury

Shows the boy his retracted teeth, then snaps them out

Swallowing the fish in one bite.

Aware the human boy also

Needs sustenance, the black

Dragon regurgitates half a fish.

Holding the saliva soaked gift,

In both his hands, the boy is

Confused as to the Fury’s intent.

Comprehension dawns. The dragon is feeding him.

Unwilling but resigned, he

Puts it in his mouth and swallows.
