Dialogue between a married couple. |
| ‘Fifty years married, John. Who’d have thought it possible?’ ‘Yes, it’s a long time to stay wed to the same person.’ ‘It’s been alright though. We’ve been happy enough.’ ‘Well, some of the time. We were too young, Mary.’ ‘Do you regret marrying me?’ ‘I regret a lot of things. But not the kids, of course, love.’ ‘We were kids ourselves, weren’t we? Eighteen-year-olds having babies.’ ‘Yes. But we’ve stuck it out for the family’s sake.’ ‘Yeah, but I think we’ve done our time. Don’t you?’ ‘What are you really saying, Mary?’ ‘Goodbye, John. I know I’ve done my time.’ |
