The Lottery Winner

As I read the want-ad, my face lit up
“Home needed, four-month-old male, Bichon pup”.
When I called, they asked, “Can you come today?”
“Of course”, I said, “I will come right away.”

Dad was allergic so he made the call
to re-home the still-nameless white fluff ball.
As soon as I saw him, he wagged his tail
and right then I knew … there would be a sale.

I looked at his papers, just to be sure
hoping my “yes” hadn’t been premature.
I learned his first two homes hadn’t worked out
but somehow that didn’t fill me with doubt.

Already smitten with this brown-eyed boy
I knew he just wanted to share his joy.
As I sat down, he brought me his teddy
as if to say, “Hi there … we are ready!”

On the long drive back home, I called my friend
to tell her about what had just happened.
She said “Your new pup won the lottery”,
but that wasn’t true … the winner, was me!
