If only I hadn't been late,
There might have been food on my plate.
It wouldn't have hurt to have some dessert,
But now I will just have to wait.

If only I hadn't been slow,
I could have had french fries, you know,
Or a burger with cheese, or green mushy peas,
Or a hot dog with chili to go.

If only I hadn't delayed,
Been held up, set back, and waylaid!
I might have been there to sample the fare,
And I would have happily paid.

If only I weren't so sedate,
I wouldn't have suffered this fate--
A tummy that rumbles, a belly that grumbles--
If only I hadn't been late!
