What we see and do not see in the winter

White lies the snow,
Hoarfrost and ice,
In the moon’s light,
Telling me of perfection,
Ermine blanketed.

Like winter-coated mice,
Instead of winter napping
Easing through drifts,
Searching for a mite of food,
One weary eye cast above
Fearing the snowy owl.
