| They paved paradise, Put up a parking lot The day that I compromised How much I was worth They put up a sale sign Above my childhood door As soon as I set aside All I had been dreaming for They called my mother Said I was grounded for life The day that I fell for it, Sharpened someone else’s knife They cancelled Christmas, Took back all the gifts The day that I stood back And let a soul flow adrift They opened the graves Let out the undead The day I said no, Not my problem to mend They built up a restaurant In the place where I slept The day I closed my heart To all of those who wept |
