In retrospect of a love affair

MOUNT LAVINIA STATION

It was a long time back I met her
at the Mount Lavinia station on a sunny day
we fell in love that day in May
became lovers, holding hands

after a spell of four years time
she took the hand of another one
leaving me alone and shocked
shattering my dreams and hopes

yesterday evening I went to the Mount Lavinia station
sat at the very spot we sat holding hands
I could see the distant sea and the setting sun
children playing in the beach, couples walking hand-in-hand

everything was as it was a long time ago, I guessed
even the speeding train to Colombo had the same rhythm
I could see the hurrying fishermen to their boats
what was missing was I sensed, her sweet smell
