Description of the rites of passage of the Matis |
| Ethnicity Assignment #6 The Matis are expert jungle hunters. Their rituals are a reflection of their environment which is harsh. Some of them consist of dripping bitter plant juice into their eyes, being whipped by rattan sticks, being injected with a frog poison called kampo which acts as a strong purgative, and being slapped with a stinging poces leaf. These tasks test a man’s courage and strength and must be endured to prove fitness and strength. Peptides contained in the frog poison contain anti-bacterial properties that may protect against illness. Just one benefit from a rite ritual. |
