Entry for the Amazing 55 Word contest -2nd Place

My sleeping ear heard the creaking board, and prodded me to awareness.  Darkness filled my eyes when they opened quickly.  My breathing shifted from sleep mode to full stop.  Who was in the house? 

It had to be my imagination. Creak.  My heart paused.  A weight landed on the foot of my bed.

Damn cat!
