Things My Father Told Me

Paternal advice on spiritual matters

These are the things my father told me,
as we walked home one Sunday night.
Read the holy scriptures carefully,
looking for the love each sacred verse contains
and feeling God's Spirit flowing from page to page.

Search for truth yourself, My Child,
do not become a victim of blind faith:
ask the difficult questions
those whose answers require
more then simply the parroting of quotations.

Memorize the holy writings,
but be able to explain
the meanings that you find;
if you chose a particular religion
know the reason for your choice.
