pausing to reflect, and cough

having completed my morning stroll
along the berm of this barrier beach
I paused to watch
a hedge of herons
who'd been keeping pace with me
the glimmer of sun on the waves
the scent of sea in the air
I took a deep breath
and choked on the smoke
from the factory over there
