“Take endangered species, please”

Deep into your heart.
Consider America without
the bald eagle.

Without her soul.

What are endangered species?
They are
the vital ingredients of landscapes.

They are my spirit.

Migrating birds whose sweet songs announce each spring.
The wildflowers that scent and color the summer meadow.
Endangered species are the rhythm of the seasons.

The instruments that make the music of nature.

Not to be
butterflies captured
to be admired in mason jars with freshly picked grass.

Rather to be left free and brave.
