Parts of a short story/ novel? that I have been struggling to find a direction for

I started this story in a creative writing class after the teacher walked in, knocked on the wall, and asked us "Who's at the door?" That was about 6 years ago and I have been working on little pieces of it since. I would love it if people could give me insight as to where they think the story is going or where they would like to see it go. That is mainly why I haven't even chosen a genre, because I don't know what direction I want to take next.
