I Am

I reminisced while I put my brother to bed one day, of what I am now. This is what I am.

I am a mother
When our mama's busy
When our papa's out
Or even when he's home

I am a daughter
Who grew up beyond my age
Yet stuck in a young woman's vessel
Sometimes missing out on little things
Things my friends enjoy with others

I am a sister
Who cares for her siblings
Looking out for the young ones
Setting discipline in absence of authority

I am a young woman
Who discovers herself
Amidst different obstacles
and varying experience
Life has thrown on my path

I am myself
First and foremost
One who will learn to break free
Because I am me
As no one else will be
On this journey of discovery
