A question regarding relationships

I'm a single person--been that way all of my life. I frequently hear coworkers telling their spouses or partners on the phone "I love you." Yet, I always wonder if they really mean it. After all, if you truly love someone, why would you hurt them? Why would you cheat on them? So, my question is this: If you only could have love or respect in a relationship, which one would you choose?
