Words spoken in haste hurt so much

Words that Hurt


My heart in splinters
         I head for the door
Mean and biting
         They cut to my core

I try and I try
         To do what's right
Your words cut through me
         Just like a knife

I hold back my tears
         I don't want to cry
I pause and ask myself
         "Why . . . Oh why?"

You know that they hurt
         and cause so much pain
I don't understand
         Why you do it again

So, I retreat inside
         and I clench my fists
I'm not sure how long
         I can go on like this

I know that you love me
         but nonetheless
What you have said
         Has made me a mess
