A promise to a loved one far away. |
| The Promise It was late in cold December, a freezing snow was coming down as we traveled lonely highways in that barren southern town. I remember. Icycles dripping off the roof tops frosted snowy white, smokey curls from warming fires in the chimneys had to fight the firey escape. I didn't know our destination was a place so far away. I would have begged them, "let's not leave her" on that cold, wintry day. I'm so sorry. Please don't worry, I remember what I said. You won't be lonely or abandoned in that arbor but, instead, I am returning. Soon my spirit will be soaring over Shenandoah I will fly. I will swoop down joyfully, reach for you. Please, please don't you cry. We will rise. On joyous day of sweet reunion, I will take you in my arms And we will fly to yonder mountains, where we both were born. We'll be home then. We will float o'er peaceful valleys between the mountains high, and remember happiness so long ago, the lovely by and by. We'll rejoice then. I've not forgotten. |
