Some thoughts that this song sparked!

Letter from the editor

Dear Reader,

I had an 'aha' moment listening to the song I've linked above, and would like to share it with you.

The song basically says that the 'awakened' person cannot 'sleep' because of the awareness of true nature, true motivations and the truth in general.

The song makes a distinction between being 'Awake' and being 'Sleepless'. A person who is 'sleepless' is a person who is worried or anxious about something, like a mother worrying about a child or a trader worrying about profit and loss.

Hence, while the physical state of 'awake' and 'sleepless' might be the same, the emotional, mental and even spiritual state are entirely different.

What possibilities this has for a writer and all the protagonists and antagonists out there!

Is your character awake, or sleepless? If awake is your character in a sublime state of awareness, or in a troubled state of brooding about the truth? If sleepless, what is it that is robbing your character of much needed rest?

Take a detective, say.
Does your detective worry because he cannot solve the crime, or is he awake because he has found a breakthrough and is excited about working on it?

Is the hero 'sleepless' while the villain is 'awake' and vice versa?

So many exciting possibilities open up, when we look at various characters being 'awake' or 'sleepless'!

Here's a fictional 'Anne' and a real 'Anne', before whe went into hiding and while in hiding.

From: Anne of Windy Poplars by LM Montgomery

I woke up last night and couldn't go to sleep again because I remembered an 'i' I hadn't dotted in a question I wrote on the board. I am certain Jen Pringle would notice it and a whisper will go round the class about it.

From: Anne Frank — The Diary of A Young Girl

Sunday, June 14, 1942
On Friday, June 12, I woke up at 6 o'clock and no wonder, because it was my birthday. But of course I wasn't allowed to get up at that hour, so I had to control my curiosity until a quarter to seven. Then I could bear it no longer and I went to the dining room and received a warm welcome from Moortje, the cat. Soon after seven, I went to Mummy and Daddy, and then to the sitting room to undo my presents – and the first to greet me was YOU (The Red-Checked Diary) possibly the nicest of all.

Friday April 2, 1943
Oh dear. I've got another terrible black mark against my name. I was lying in bed yesterday evening waiting for Daddy to say my prayers with me and wish me goodnight when Mummy came into my room, sat on my bed and asked very nicely, "Anne, Daddy can't come yet, shall I say your prayers with you tonight?"

"No, Mummy," I answered.

Mummy got up, paused by my bed for a moment and then walked slowly towards the door. Suddenly she turned around and with a distorted look on her face said, "I don't want to be cross. Love cannot be forced."

There were tears in her eyes as she left the room.

I lay still in bed, feeling at once that I had been horrible to push her away so rudely. But I knew too that I couldn't have answered differently. It simply wouldn't work. I felt sorry for Mummy – very, very sorry, because I had seen for the first time in my life that she minds my coldness. I saw the look of sorrow on her face when she spoke of love not being forced.

It is hard to speak the truth and yet it is the truth. She herself has pushed me away. Her tactless remarks and her crude jokes which I don't find at all funny have now made me insensitive to any love from her side.

Just as I shrink at her hard words so her heart when she realised the love between us was gone. She cried half the night and hardly slept at all. Daddy doesn't look at me, and if he does for a second then I can read in his eyes the words 'How can you be so unkind? How can you bring yourself to cause your mother such sorrow?'

They expect me to apologise but this is something I can't apologise for because I spoke the truth and Mummy will have to know it sooner or later anyway.

I seem, and indeed am, indifferent both to Mummy's tears and to Daddy's looks.

Hope you try the technique!

Thanks for listening!

Nice article on feedback. I value it myself, and have had fruitful conversations with others that started with feedback on a review. As long as we are on the subject, here's some feedback:

I had to do some searching to find out what "CV" (Curriculum vitae) means. One good rule to follow is to spell out an initialism or acronym the first time you use it. Don't assume everyone will understand what a cryptic sequence of letters means.

Thanks for this informative newsletter!
