Bon jour, Lorraine!
I’m reviewing this as a "The WDC Angel ArmyOpen in new Window. Angel and to thank you for all the reviews you do on this site!
This is a really neat piece about creating characters, more specifically character names, and I couldn’t agree more about putting time into making the name fit their persona. I don't put as much time into it as you do, but I do make it a point to try name my characters appropriately.
So what's in a name? Let me tell you a little secret, but you gotta keep it to yourself. My real name is James Jones, but I've always gone by 'Jim'. That was bad enough, but just before I started high school back in 1978, that nutcase preacher and cult leader Jim Jones made all those people commit suicide down in Guyana in South America by having them drink Kool Aid laced with cyanide! My high school chums wouldn't let me live that down for my first two years of high school. They call called me 'Rev'!
Aaarggh! So let's just keep that between you and me, eh? Only two or three other people on here know me by my real name (probably a few more now since someone other than you is sure to read this review!), and I'd rather it stayed that way. Although if somebody were to poke around in my portfolio long enough, they could find it.
I've noticed that Dean Koontz uses alliterative names (such as mine) more often than not in his novels. Can't think of any off the top of my head, but they're like Mike Morris or Betty Benson. Stan Lee of Marvel Comics is also known for his alliterative names: Peter Parker, Curt Connors, Stephen Strange and the like.
One of my favorite books is Stephen King's The Dead Zone. The main character is named John Smith. How ordinary and plain is that? The first time I saw that I said, "C'mon, King! You're a fantastic author, and you couldn't come up with a better name than that?"
May as well have just named him Jim Jones! *Rolling*
As for the name Siobhan (as in Siobhan Falen), I’d never even heard of that name until she joined WdC! I’m a major fan of hers, by the way (she’s an incredible horror writer!), but I really never knew how to pronounce her name. You gave two pronunciations, neither of which I would have guessed, even if one was wrong. I’ve always pronounced it ‘SHAY-bən’. Don’t ask me how I came up with that—I was guessing! Now I’m going to have to ask her just to be sure you’re right! *Laugh*
One of my daughter’s friends is named ‘Chantel’, pronounced ‘Shawn-TALL’. I never would have guessed that one either if I wouldn’t have heard my daughter say it first.
Anyway, great piece! I'm going to poking around in your port to see if you any other gems about writing I can check out!
One tiny niggle (2nd line to the last):
‘...explain the pronunciation at sone point.’
Kee ponw ritin gon, my friend! Thanks for sharing this, and have a marvelous day/evening/tomorrow or whatever time it is over there across the pond! *Bigsmile*
