One good thing about time is the ability to look back and to make corrections. Sometimes it is too late, but at other times it allows us the opportunity to make amends, so that when we make a mistake, we can hopefully correct it. That is what I see here when you wrote:
I failed to realise then
That you are my true friend
Whom I should have understood
And made use good
While you didn't realize it then, there is always that chance to correct the mistake, and that is what you did. The poem then goes on to speak of the good qualities of your friend, true it's in a hyperbolic tone, but that just shows the extent of your feelings, and after-all who wants to be prosaic when it comes to a friend? No, we want to see only was is good in them and sing it from the rooftop.
It is good that you were able to show your friend how really felt. Sometimes we never get that chance, but as you suggested, that is the value of time and it's good that you learned that and were able to apply it. I wish you and your friend many years of continued friendship.
