Title: The Woodbine House

Author: Annisha_writes Author Icon

Type: Short story

Not a lot happens here, but you did warn the reader in the short description that the story isn't finished yet. It is a little hard to analyse this beginning. We see a college-aged person sitting inside his/her car, outside an old home. It is a place the narrator believed she/he’d never return to, but there the person was, slowly walking from the car to the front door of the old house. We are told that it is a cold October day and we do the rest. We can see the fog from his/her breath, the crunch of the frosty ground, and that gray sky above. When he/she pulls the coat tighter round, so do we, in our minds, for we’ve already felt the cold.

We know its name, “The Woodbine House.” We know it was this person’s home as a youth. We don’t know what happened to his/her family, nor why the house is now abandoned. We don’t even know if the narrator knew the house was abandoned before he/she arrived here. However, from the sound of it, I would guess it was news to the narrator. Finally, we know that it is his/her grandmother’s house. However, that is where the story ends, at least here.

Where the story will go from here, only you can say. Whether it will be drama, romance, horror, or some other genre, again, only you know. The reader just sits waiting impatiently for you to finish, assuming you plan to complete it.
