With Mac spotting for him (his nickname of “Fat Mac” has never been so appropriate!) Mike starts to lift. The 280 pound bar - 20 more than he used to lift - rises easily.
“Hey Mac, pile it on!” he calls out. “That was easy!”
Mac packs on another two 20 pound plates and Mike makes a second lift - easily!
“More, more!” says Mike gleefully. “This is great!”
Mac rearranges the plates to take the bar to 350. “Try that!”
“Uhhhh,” says Mike, as he lifts the bar steadily up. “More weight!” he calls after the set down.
“Are you sure?” asks Mac.
“Sure I’m sure. Go for 400!” Mike retorts.
As Mac is rearranging the plates for a weight no one on the team has ever lifted before, Coach looks around the weight room, and sees that the story of unprecedented lifting is being repeated everywhere. There’s John, their former “Greek God” quarterback, blimped up beyond 300 pounds and lifting at least that much; Joey, like Mike inflated to at least 400 pounds and, by the look of it, with more than that on the bar; and Will, their powerlifter-to-be, apparently fulfilling his dreams with 500 pounds on the bar. As he takes this in, Coach is suddenly less downcast. “At least these blimps seem to be strong,” he says to himself. “I’m sure they’re too slow, though. And Hogarth said they’d eat for a week!”
