Chapter #5

Man Down

    by: MightyHalberd Author IconMail Icon
Was he dead?

No....no, probably not. Being dead wouldn't hurt this much.

Garrus should have been dead. The gunship swinging into view, the cannons opening fire and ripping through him like that. Not exactly a day at the beach, to put it mildly.

Something mumbled nearby. He tried opening his eyes. One didn't want to work, and the other he wished wouldn't worked when something bright pierced his retina. He grunted, trying to throw a hand up to block out the light but only managing a slight twitch.

"...coming around," the mumble said, sounding a little familiar. "Garrus...can you hear me Vakarian?" The cloudy shapes in his vision began to sharpen, and he caught sight of a familiar, older face.

"Chakwas?" Garrus murmured weakly. "Never thought I'd be...happy to see you... again..." He tried to shift around, crying out in pain as what felt like a hot poker twisted in his side. Trying to move his head around was little better, as he felt the thick layer of bandages plastering the right side of his face

"Careful, you were torn up pretty badly by those mercenaries," Chakwas reassured him. "Luckily I managed to patch you up before your insides started falling out."

"Heh..." Garrus chuckled, somewhat amused at his own survival. "Thought you'd...appreciate the challenge."

"Good to have you back Vakarian," Chakwas replied coolly as the door behind her suddenly slid open. Garrus would have smiled if moving his mouth didn't hurt so much. He recognized that red hair in an instant.

"Garrus, you're alright!" Shepard said, dressed in her casual gear but with her face still caked with the blood and debris of the battle on Omega.

"Not too sure about 'alright'," Garrus said weakly. "Think we could settle on 'alive'?"

"I can work with that," Shepard laughed. "How bad was he, Chakwas?"

"Bad, but he'll pull through," Chakwas reported, consulting her medical datapad. "He'll need bed rest for at least a week while I stitch him back together, and longer before he goes out and blows himself up again."

"You wound me, doctor," Garrus quipped. He chuckled slightly, which he immediately regretted when it was followed by a stabbing pain in his side again.

"You won't have any lasting damage in your muscles or other organs, but there will be some scarring," Chakwas continued. "Dermal implants could fix it up easily, but I don't have any on hand right now."

"That's fine, besides...chicks dig the scars." He shot a look at Shepard with his good eye, and the slight smirk on her grin confirmed that his claim was right.

"You can go find a girlfriend later, Vakarian," Chakwas said, almost scolding him. "Right now, you need rest. And probably a good meal in you, I can't imagine you found anything resembling sustenance on that rock."

"No...can't say Omega was...a nice place to get a bite," Garrus admitted.

---

“Mmm...”

Garrus leaned back as much as the shooting pains in his side would allow, the taste of a remarkably good meal still on his lips. For a radical alien-hating terrorist organization, Cerberus sure knew how to whip up some nice Dextro-cuisine.

“Comfortable there?” Chakwas called over from her desk, going over something of her paperwork.

“Burrrp…yep..” Garrus said, letting out a slight belch before he spoke. Closing his uncovered eye, he brushed his hand over his stomach, feeling the heavy bulge packed inside. “Haven’t had food like that in ages.”

“I won’t begrudge you seconds or thirds like that once in a while, but don’t make it a habit,” Chakwas warned him. “You’re going to be sedentary for some time, add that to a heavy diet, and-”

“Relax doc, I can control myself,” Garrus reassured her, feeling himself drifting off.
