Chapter #8The Upside Down Room? by: Marvusum “Hm? What a strange looking room. It's as if everything is…” Chloé gasped when she looked up. “Everything is upside down?!”
As she realized this, her hair and dress shifted in gravity, quickly falling down around her. Despite no one being around to see, Chloé got flustered and held her dress down to avoid exposing herself. She looked down at the room below: an empty space, much larger than the rooms she’d just gone through. The floor and walls had checkerboard-like patterns of blue and white paint. At the end of the room was another door, but it was hard to gauge how big or small this door was from her unique position.
“H-How is this possible?”
She tried to make sense of her surroundings as she walked around while looking up… or was it down? The gravity in this room had a mind of its own. But how was she going to get to the floor? As an idea, Chloé tried to jump, but gravity still did not shift. When she landed, the ceiling beneath started to crack. She gasped, looking down (or up, as it were) at her feet. Suddenly, she fell through the ceiling as she screamed. Gravity seemed to shift again, as she found herself falling down into another room, landing on her front with a light bounce.
“Ugh…” Chloé groaned, putting her hand on her chest as she got back up. Slowly, she rolled over and looked up, noticing that the hole she had fallen through had seemingly vanished, as if she had never fallen through one at all. She pulled herself up and looked around the room, noticing that it seemed to be no different from the previous room. She turned and walked towards where the entrance should have been, putting her hands on the wall and trying to push through. It was no use, however: it was as if there was never a door there to begin with.
“Oh dear… what do I do?”
Chloé turned around to face the door she’d seen earlier on the other side of the room. She folded her arms pensively, wondering why this place made so little sense. If this was a dream like she thought it was, then it made sense for it to not make sense. She cautiously paced herself across the room, hoping that nothing weird happened to her on the way over. When she reached the other end, she looked down to see a tiny door with a relatively giant lock.
“This door… Why does this all seem so… familiar? Could it be?” Chloé stopped herself from getting too excited. If what this was indeed was what she thought it was, then this was going to be the adventure of a lifetime! Chloé knelt down and tried the handle of the miniscule door, but it was locked, as expected. “Hmm…”
Chloé stood back up and looked around for a key. As if appearing from her thoughts, a round glass table had mysteriously popped up behind her when she wasn’t looking. She smiled, thinking that this was exactly what she expected to happen. All of this craziness was starting to make more sense. Excited by what she thought would happen next, she went over to the table.
"Is that..?" Chloé wondered aloud, seeing a small bottle on top of the table. She skipped over to it in a hurry. It was clear and held a bright blue liquid within, but most distinct of all was the tag wrapped around it, which read 'Drink Me'.
Chloé smiled, practically beaming at this point. She picked up the little bottle and giggled knowingly to herself. With a nod, she uncorked it and brought it up to her face. Her green eyes examined everything about it as closely as she could . If this was what she thought it was, then her fall earlier was not something to fret about - rather, she might be in for one of the most unforgettable adventures of her life!
"Mmm, it even smells like I imagined it would!" Chloé commented as she took a whiff of the blue liquid's aroma after giving it a little swivel in her hands. She tilted her head to the side, looking up at the ceiling as she imagined what would happen if she were to drink this potion. If this world she'd fallen into was really based on 'Alice in Wonderland', then she had a good idea of what the effects would be. Not that she had much of a choice; It was either drink from the familiar bottle or remain stuck in this small room for the rest of her life.
"Well, bottoms up!" Chloé giggled, bringing the small bottle up to her lips and downing the liquid in an instant. She wiped her lips and patiently waited for the effects to hit her, smiling in anticipation all the while. "It even tastes sweet!"
As soon as Chloé said that, she felt her body start to quickly shift downwards. She let out a startled yelp at how fast it was, despite having expected it. Indeed, she was shrinking. At a consistent pace, no less, similar to how Alice had shrunk in the book after drinking the very same potion. The sensation took her by surprise at first, but she soon started giggling, feeling almost a little too giddy about living out one of her biggest fantasies. She was losing her size rapidly, the bottle she was holding growing bigger while she shrank. This made sense, but as she looked at the bottle grow, she realized that something was off: It wasn’t just the bottle that was growing, so were her bracelets! Chloé snapped out of her daydreaming as she noticed how heavy and big her dress was becoming. That could’ve only meant one thing… her clothes weren't shrinking with her!
"Oh my, this is unexpected!" Chloé said, biting her lip as she felt her entire body become slowly enveloped by the dress she loved wearing. This was a change from the book: Alice's clothes had shrunk with her in that story, but it seemed in this story that only Chloé's body would shrink, not what she was wearing. Not even the little bow in her hair shrunk with her, unravelling the strand it usually kept in a twirl.
Chloé struggled to control her rapidly increasing clothing, which appeared more and more like she was wearing a tent that was trying to swallow her as she got smaller and smaller. Being in this story made her feel like a little girl, but she didn't want to actually feel like a little girl playing dress-up with her mother's clothes!
"W-Wait!" Chloé begged to nobody, nearly falling over herself as she continued to shrink. She lost her grip on the 'Drink Me' bottle, which dropped safely from her smaller hands as she fell into the folds of her giant dress. "Eep!"
Chloé didn't even get a chance to see how small she was getting, too busy trying to not get buried underneath her own clothes. She didn't know what to feel at this point. Her dream was turning against her. Nobody was in this room to see her embarrassing situation, but that hardly made her feel any better about it.
Ultimately, Chloé managed to get herself out from the mess of her dress that had piled around her, crawling out from under her skirt. She held the hem of her top up to her chest, providing ample covering for her naked, tiny body as she looked around at how huge everything had become to her. She gulped with a nervous smile, feeling a little overwhelmed as she looked at her gigantic boots, one of which remained upright and towered over her while the other one had fallen over on its side, but was still taller than she was. The bottle had rolled against the table leg, with only a few drops remaining inside.
"Well... this is a bit… unexpected. Uhm… what now?" Chloé whispered to herself, thinking that her ordeal was only just beginning. She knew the story of Alice well, so if this was the extent of the differences in the story and her current predicament, she’d be fine. Yet there was one obstacle she still needed to overcome that Alice never dealt with in the story: finding new clothes to wear.
“At least I’m alone and nobody can see me like this.” Chloé blushed as she held onto her dress tightly. She turned back around towards the little door, relieved that she was probably the perfect size to fit through now. She started going over to it, yet stopped herself short when she realized that she had made a mistake, one that Alice had also made in the book… She looked up reluctantly at the table, spotting a key resting on top that wasn’t there before.
“Oh, how silly of me! I suppose even knowing what happens in the book won’t be enough to help me avoid some mistakes…” she pouted, only to start smiling. “But, this is just like what happened in the story! Just how am I going to get up there now and reach it?”
Chloé shifted her focus to getting onto the table somehow. She couldn’t be bigger than six inches at this point, obviously far too short to reach. There wasn’t even a chair that she’d be able to climb on top of. Continuing to stare upward, her eyes suddenly lit up with an idea.
“Wait… at this point in the story, there should be something to appear that can make me grow super huge!”
As she looked around the room, she saw that a small box had appeared nearby. Chloé got giddy with excitement as she stepped out of her giant dress. “No point in trying to wear something if I’m about to grow out of it!”
There was a small lock on the box that had already been unlocked. Chloé flipped it open to find several large (to her) pieces of chocolate, each of them stating “Don’t Eat Me”. With a confused look on her face, she leaned into the box to try and smell the chocolate. It smelled amazing, and with how small she was, she’d be able to feast on it for days!
“How strange, shouldn’t it be saying ‘Eat Me’ instead of ‘Don’t Eat Me’? Could this be another change to the story?”
As much as she wanted to, Chloé didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks by blindly eating the chocolate. Perhaps there was another way to reach the key? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
